US President Donald Trump has supported the safe and phased reopening of the US economy, devastated by the coronavirus epidemic that killed more than 50,000 people in just a few months and more than eight million people have been infected.
More than 95 percent of the nation’s 330 million people are at home as a result of social crises enforced by 1 May, including social mitigation measures under the Home Stay Order. Trump indicated on Thursday that it extended beyond May 1, but stressed the need to gradually open up the secure economy.
In the past few weeks, more than 26 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits and that figure is likely to surpass 40 million according to some estimates soon. Both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have projected negative growth in the US in 2020.
“For the US to gain momentum, every citizen needs to maintain vigilance, and we all understand that very well we have overcome it, many times it involves practicing good hygiene, maintaining social distance and Voluntary use of face-covering is included, ” he said.
“Reopening our economy is safe and phased, it is very exciting, but that does not mean that we are reducing our guard in any way; Conversely, continued diligence is an essential part of our strategy to get our country back to work, ”Trump told reporters at his daily White House news conference on coronavirus.
He said that the figures and facts on the ground show that America is making a lot of progress. In 23 states, new cases have declined. In peak week, 40 percent of US counties have also seen a rapid decline in new cases. He said 46 states had a decline in patients showing coronavirus-like symptoms.
Trump said that the US is very close to finding a vaccine for COVID-19.
